Burl, Brass, Black, Brown…

photo-19

I have always had a thing for mixing black and brown.  It is one of those “rules”  I do not mind breaking in design.  I recently came across these amazing burl wood geometric vintage lamps from the 70′s (above) and seeing the room image above made me pull the trigger.  These will be the perfect finishing detail to our living room.  Will have some custom black shades made and use a brass finial of some sort. Burl, Brass, Black, Brown–repeat!  Here are a few more inspiration photos of this classic yet cool combination…have a great weekend!  xx Elizabeth

Dreaming Of A White Kitchen…

White Kitchen 2

We are taking on a huge project this weekend.  Huge.  We have decided to paint our kitchen cabinets ourselves.   Well, I have decided to paint them and my husband has offered to help me (let’s hope we are still speaking to each other on Monday!).  We have been lucky enough of have professionals paint our entire house, install our flooring, design our built ins ECT that we felt that we should try something on our own.  This  little cabinet project may be a tad aggressive but, we are up for the challenge.   When we moved in last July I wanted to let the wood cabinets that came with the house sink in and really decide if I liked them.  Well, 7 months later….I have decided they have to go.  We are going white.  It will make the kitchen look ten times brighter.  PS. There are 20 cabinets + 27 drawers so wish us luck! See the before photo below and some white kitchen inspiration….

What the kitchen looks like now.  I also am changing out the cabinet pulls and replacing them with brass.  The kitchen walls are painted in Benjamin Moore Ebony King.  Once the cabinets are painted we will add some white shelving above the sink.

Design Detail / Heavy Metal

Heavy Metal_1

I kind of fell in love with this photo yesterday.  How great are the vintage metal file cabinets in this office?  It got me thinking about metal accents.  If done right, they can really be a bold statement.  Here are a few other offices or design studios that have also incorporated metal (done right!)  Above:  Alicia Lund from Chetah Is The New Black found the perfect vintage cabinets for her home studio–love how they look against her bright white floor and walls.

What an amazing looking parsons desk (this is no West Elm Parsons Desk that is for sure!)  Again, chrome paired with bright white–a look that always works I think.

Heavy Metal_3

The vintage piece above reminds me of  my old gym lockers from Jr. High School.  What a great piece for a design studio, makes filing look cool.

I am thinking these steps are not functional and more for show.  I love this minimalist look. Fuchsia + chrome are always a nice match….

Oh Celine.   When I saw the image below, while reading / looking at pictures, in Elle Magazine I was so drawn to the shape of this bag.  I then took a look at the whole Celine Summer 2014 accessories collection and was blown away.  Here are a few favorites…

Design Detail: Shine Bright / Diamond Shaped Lighting

Diamond Pendant Lighting

I have been on the hunt for a cool geometric pendant light for our kitchen counter.  I love the image above.  The various sized diamond pendant lights in this dining space really completes the look.   Here are a few others…talk about statement lighting!

Design Detail: Metallic Accents

Hallway

I was so drawn to the metallic accents featured in this very cool London home.  Take a look to see where they pop up as some are pretty unexpected.  Above:  The finish used on the shelf.

On Mixing Textures…

Metallic-Middle-Pillow_StonAs a designer I am always looking for unique ways to use textiles.  I love mixing textures and experimenting with “hard” and “soft” elements.     This little play on words is even carried into our company name, Stone Textile.  Stone being the “hard” element while Textile is the “soft element.  The Metallic Middle Pillow, shown above, was one of my first designs and is a personal favorite.  The outside and back are a soft textured cotton while the middle overlay piece is a metal netting blend.  See how other designers have chosen to mix textures below…
